New Music and Movies this Week

MUSIC!

There’s lots to love this week including one Kenny and Sandy both think you’ll enjoy from guitarist Ken Navarro. Ken delivers 12 pure solo guitar tunes (no overdubs) and covers classics like Imagine and Europa for an exceptional collection. Kenny recommends listening with a glass of wine on the deck. Meantime, Sandy says run…don’t walk to your favorite music store (or your computer!)  to get Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society. An incredible talent who’s creativity and class helped win her a Grammy for best new artist, has a fantastic new 2 CD/DVD package.

Kenny’s yawning at what’s new, but Sandy’s going to follow the crowd and pick The Hunger Games. There’s been so much hype and the book was so popular, it does look like it will be good. Besides, singer and actor Lenny Kravitz in one of the film’s stars

  MUSIC!

Some cool things came out this week including Greg Adams and the return of his 10 piece band with East Bay Soul 2.0! It’s a stellar release from the former Tower of Power trumpeter and his select collection of primo musicians. It’s Sandy’s pick of the week.

For Kenny, it’s all about Grover! Also out is one by of his major influences, the late great Grover Washington, Jr.– Strawberry Moon/Then & Now/Time Out of Mind. This newly released 2 disc import contains the music of 3 incredible masterpieces from the ground-breaking sax man.

Looking for something to pop in for family movie night or to view on your laptop or tablet on the go? You’ve got some nice choices this week. Kenny’s good friend Rob Lowe is in a  flick with Jeremy Piven called  I Melt With You. It’s about a group of 40-something college buddies who get together for an annual reunion. Things are get very out of hand as debauchery ensues. Kenny says Mr. Lowe warned him you have to be in a certain mood to view this and it is certainly not for everyone–but it’s a good film. If you’re looking for something lighter and more family-friendly, how about Sandy’s pick– Martin Scorsese’s Oscar Winning Animated adventure Hugo.

IN THEATERS

Dr. Suess would have celebrated a birthday this week so it’s a great time for The Lorax to hit theaters. Kids and kids at heart will likely enjoy this animated feature with the voices of Danny Devito, Zac Efron and Ed Helms.  Also fun (but just for the grown folks) is  Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. With appearances by Will Ferrell and Zach Galifiankis, it’s Kenny’s pick of the week!

It’s Oscar weekend, so why not start with new movies. Halleluyer, the much-anticipated Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds hits screens! Also the thriller Gone, the Navy Seals Movie Act of Valor and the romantic comedy Wanderlust are out.

Hangin’ at home or looking for a new movie to download to your tablet? Kenny’s pick is J. Edgar, directed by his friend Clint Eastwood (and how can you go wrong with Clint?).
