THE WATER  TRICK! Want to eat less? Drink a glass of water before a meal, you’ll feel fuller faster and probably consume a smaller amount of food.

THEY CALL IT DIET SODA–BUT…Many studies show it can lead to weight GAIN. Huh? Various theories exist. One is that artificial sweeteners increase sweets cravings.

GET ALL YOUR NUTRIENTS! Take a multi-vitamin. Even if you eat a balanced diet, you may be over-estimating how well you eat. The supplements can help you fill in the gaps.

Having a holiday party or get-together? Why not offer some healthy dessert options? Maybe along with that cake or pie, serve a fresh fruit tray or some luscious chocolate covered strawberries!

Want to avoid majorly overdoing it on Thanksgiving? Spread your eating out. Some families take a couple hours between dinner and dessert. Organize a touch football game or go on walk before your pumpkin pie for extra health benefits….and fun!

Should you eat organic? Nutritionists disagree on its value. However, The USDA’s tests do show that most non-organic produce contain residual pesticides even after washing. Buying everything organic can be pricey. The top recommended foods to buy organic are: celery, pears, peaches, apples and cherries.

You’ve heard the term attitude is everything? A group of researchers at the Stanford Longevity Center say having a good attitude may be the key to living longer. Staying positive can mean less stress and lower cortisol levels–and may well add to your life!

Go straight to the gym, do not pass go…or stop at home! If you work out at the end of the day (somewhere other than your home..a gym, fitness class, etc.), don’t go home first. That lure of being home and settling in may entice you to skip your workout!

Fit Bits

Let’s stay smooth AND healthy! Here are some recent Fit Bits* from the show.

We all know that not getting enough sleep has many not-so-pleasant effects. As it turns out, not all all of them are as obvious as falling asleep when you shouldn’t. According to Lifescript.com, sleep deprivation has been linked to weight gain, depression, anxiety, heart disease and insulin resistance. Yikes! We better get our Z’s!

Need even more incentive to eat better? According to Web MD, a healthy diet is as good for your mind as it is for your body. If your diet lacks essential nutrients, it can decrease your ability to concentrate. In addition, eating too much or too little can also mess with your ability to focus. Too much can make you lethargic and too little leads to those distracting hunger pangs.

Trying to lose weight? Many studies say don’t skip meals. If you do your body may think it’s in “starvation mode” and your metabolism may slow down. Plus, you when you pass on, say, lunch…you are more likely to overeat at dinner. In the end, of course, calories in and calories burned are probably the key.

Got a few minutes? Let’s get physical! A new study posted in the Lancet shows that if inactive people put in just 15 minutes of exercise a day, they would increase their life expectancy by 3 years.
